Controversy Sells But for Kadal it's just too Late

The latest on Mani Ratnam's disastrous 'Kadal' is that the Madras High Court has issued a notice to Mani Ratnam and the censor board officials who censored the movie.Earlier a petitioner had filed a case against the movie saying that it hurts Christian sentiments and that they wanted the censor certificate to be canceled.

It would have done a world of good for Kadal's publicity if this had come before the movie hit the screens,we wonder if the call for this ban comes in a bit too late since the movie reel has been packed up and shelved in most of the theatres.'Kadal' as we all know hit the screens on February 1st amidst the hurricane controversy which was surrounding 'Vishwaroopam'.It opened to a very poor response and ended up as the worst ever opening for a Mani film in over a decade.

As rumours went around that 'Kadal' could be pushed to a later date to support 'Vishwaroopam' but it wasn't the case and the team decided to release it on February 1st and it ended up being a debacle of sorts.Critics had thrashed the movie for it's wafer thin screenplay and some even went on to term it as Mani's worst movie in his career, but noted national award winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan who recently released a book called 'Conversations with Mani Ratnam' was all praises for the movie.In his review he termed the movie as "interesting", this certainly didn't go well with the readers and his review wasn't well received.Note that Rangan has admitted that he is a fan of the man and ever since debates on the topic should fan boys be allowed to review their idols work went around.

End of An Era for Mani Ratnam ?

It is a known fact by now that Mani Ratnam's 'Kadal' has totally sunken at the box office.After the release of 'Vishwaroopam' in Tamil Nadu, the movie has struggled to hold on to theatres which was screening the movie.'Kadal' a straight Tamil film from Mani after 11 years came in with huge expectations and was sold to Gemini Films in March 2012 at a huge cost. Now distributors have started to complain that they weren't even able to recover 50% of the cost. It was at this point when all distributors lined up at Madras Talkies office in Adyar and demanded Mani should compensate for the loss they have suffered.

But Mani has stated that his production house is not responsible for the losses incurred.In a statement released by the production house which said "Madras Talkies had sold their film 'Kadal' (Both Tamil and Dubbed Telugu Version) to Gemini Industries and Imaging Ltd in March 2012 on Minimum Guarantee Basis,Madras Talkies has had no other dealing with anyone else for the distribution of their film,nor has been party to any contracts Gemini might have entered into in this regard".

Distributors who were hoping for some compensation for the huge losses that they have faced were hugely disappointed even more when Gemini Industries also stated that they are no way responsible for the loss suffered by the distributors.
Looks like this could the end of an era for the Legendary Mani Ratnam.

The Latest on Mani Ratnam's disastrous venture "Kadal" is that "Mannan Films" have filed a complaint against "Mani Ratnam" in regard to the 16 Crores they have suffered in releasing "Kadal" and they have also added in the complaint that they were threatened by Mani Ratnam's Manager in regard to this claim. 
In return the legendary director has also gone out  a filed a petition in Abhirampuram police station seeking police protection.

"Kadal" movie failed to live up to the expectation it created , the movie was a huge let down to all the fans who expected this movie to be one of Mani Ratnam's gem , but all it did was a create a doubt in the minds of our fans, if the Legendary Mani Ratnam has lost his touch after all.

The First promotion of the movie was when AR Rahman played out a magical version of "Nenjukulle" song in a MTV show, there were rumors that this song would feature a beautiful romance between Arjun and Lakshmi Manchu but there was no such song in the theatrical version , rather "Nenjukkule" song was used just as a montage piece.

This is what Lakshmi had to say regarding this " I was totally shocked and surprised by the cut , but i'm sure Mani Sir would have his reason and i'm deeply grateful for the opportunity Mani sir has given me.

When "Kadal" Trailer was out , one thing that got everyone talking was the passionate lip lock between Goutham Karthik and Thulasi Nair. A Kiss & Tell Story of Kadal's Goutham and Thulasi

The next gen couple Gautham and Thulasi of the much awaited 'Kadal' and the son and daughter of Karthik and Radha respectively in a recent interview have opened up on how they were required to prepare for their respective roles in the movie.

The gorgeous Thulasi Nair who is just in her teenage and preparing for her 10th Exams in Mumbai says she was a plump girl and never expected to get into movies. Her father is a huge industrialist in Mumbai and quite naturally she wanted to enter into his business , but things changed one fine day when Mani Ratnam walked into their house wanting to cast her in 'Kadal' . She says that she had to reduce more than 12 kilos to play the role of 'Beatrice'. Being Radha's daugher she was not given an easy ticket to cinema , Mani being who he is, did a photo shoot with her and  trained her in acting for 20 days. When the first trailer of  'Kadal' was released many people were surprised with the intimacy displayed by her especially the kiss she shared with Gautham, when asked about it she said that Mani Ratnam would never want to shoot such a scene for the sake of it , they were also asked if they are comfortable doing such a scene and the scene itself took 4 hours to shoot.

On the other hand , Gautham Karthik has revealed that he prepared for his fisherman role by training with the fisherman community at the Marina Beach . He thanked 'Action King' Arjun for helping him out to lose weight and  preparing him for his role as 'Thomas'.  When asked on what his favourite movie of his father is  , he says that 'Agni Natchathiram' is his all time favourite and he also reveals that he was offered a remake of the cult movie alongside Vikram Prabhu but refused it since he did not want spoil his father's image and hence he would never do it .

"David" is all set to Face the Waves of "Kadal"

February 1 was set as the day of War as "David" and "Kadal" go head to head at the box office domination battle. 'David' as we reported earlier was rumored to release on 8th of February since "Kadal" was supposedly confirmed for February 1st release ,  An interesting fact is that Mani Ratnam is actually the guru of Bejoy Nambiyar who incidentally helped out in framing the script for 'David'.

Further digging in to the making of this scene, it is heard that the scene which is said to last only for 10 seconds, was shot for 4 hours as the heroine Thulasi Nair was very much concerned about shooting the scene in the presence of huge crowd and film technicians.

Director Mani Ratnam, the perfectionist he is, after vacating his technicians, had to go for several takes to bring the best out of the pair for the scene. Kadal, being one of the most expected movies of the year, is advertised in all media with the release date as February 1st.

Kadal Comes First Then David

The latest on Bejoy Nambiar's Tamil version of 'David' which was initially scheduled to hit the screens on February 1st is now being pushed to February 8th.  Bejoy who started off his career with his promising Hindi flick 'Shaitan' is a former protege of Mr.Mani Ratnam. He has worked as a line producer for 'Raavan/Raavanan' and also as an assistant in Ratnam's 'Guru' . Also what should be noted here is that since the screenplay of  'David' is very complicated and the movie itself falls under the category of "hyperlink cinema" which we have seen previously in Mani's 2004 movie 'Aayutha Ezhuthu' he turned to his mentor for some tweaks in the screenplay. Mani being the legend he is helped Bejoy out and now out of respect for his mentor and guru , Bejoy has postponed the Tamil version of 'David' to February 8th since Mani's much awaited 'Kadal' was first speculated that it might be pushed to later date to help out Vishwaroopam but Thulasi Nair has just tweeted that "Kadal" is indeed scheduled to release on February 1st.
